Graphic Design UK blog has a good article on how to discipline yourself when you have to do work for yourself. Usually, for professional designers, this happens when they have to design a logo for themselves, or a brochure, or a website. It's hard to work without a client brief. Design students are also, essentially, in the same boat.
This article offers a number of steps to help you get motivated and focused on a design project when you're the client.

It reminds me a design i made for one of my friend. He actually exactly knew what he wanted. I was just the hand which moved the mouse for him and handled the software that he do not know to use. I think it is a recurrent dilemma for designer: where is the limit of designer decision within cutomer's demands?
Some customers are so fussy about the design that they want as we are lead to design something that is not good or that we don't like.
The ironic thing is that he told me last week:
"I met a designer last week. He told me that YOUR brochure was a piece of shit"...
